Over the past 18 months, Tim has researched and designed a prototype for a Flammleisten and Wellenleisten machine, also known as the Ripple and Wave machine. There were no plans for this so it was trial and error, looking back to basic drawings from an 18th-century encyclopaedia by a French philosopher named Denis Diderot. After three failed attempts the machine is now functioning to create the beautiful designs you can see.
This machine works by scraping a blade over a piece of wood following a jig. The woods we are currently using are Pear and Walnut as they were favoured by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th century which is why this method is also known as the Dutch Ripple.
